Intrinsic Imaging
Three steps are required to create Intrinsic images: Obtaining mage sets, Renaming image sets, and Processing image sets. The following instructions provide the way to produce Intrinsic images.
Obtaining Image Sets
Producing an Intrinsic image requires a set of Focused and Diffused images of the same field of view. The images are taken one after the other to insure that the camera settings, environmental conditions and field of view are the same for both exposures.
- Have the Diffusing element such that the diffusing material can cover and uncover the camera lens.
- Set the camera to the desired the exposure parameters.
- Focus on the subject matter and take a picture.
- While still focused on the subject, cover the camera lens with the diffuse material and take another exposure.
- A successful image set contains the original image that is well exposed and focused, and the second image that is diffuse and has no detail in field of view.
Renaming Image Sets
The Intrinsic Processing program requires that the image sets have a specific naming format obtained by the following renaming procedure.
- Rename the focused image by placing F_ at the beginning of the new image name. Use a descriptive word for the subject of the image name followed by type of image. Example: A focused image of a flower, with the original designation IMG_3865.jpeg, could be renamed as F_flower.jpeg.
- Rename the diffused image by placing D_ at the beginning of the second image followed by the same descriptive word and type. Example: The diffused image of the flower, IMG_3866, is renamed as D_flower.jpeg
- For convenience, place the image sets into a renamed folder from which to import the image sets into the Intrinsic Processing program.
Processing Image Sets
Now, the re-named image sets can be processed by pressing the Image Processing button on the Home page.
- Register as a user and Sign in.
- Click on the Import images button in the Intrinsic Processing page.
- Navigate to your folder containing the renamed image sets.
- Highlight the image pair, or pairs (batch processing) you wish to process.
- Click on the Open button to import the image sets into the processing table.
- Review the names of the image pairs imported into the table to ensure each row has a F_ and D_ file listed.
- Click on the Process button and watch the box to the right of each image set turn green with a check mark and list an intrinsic file of the same name, e.g., I_flower.jpeg . This indicates the processing of the pair was successful.
- The I_ file was down loaded to the dock at the bottom of the page, as well as, in the download folder in your computer. Suggestion: Save the I- files in the folder that contains the F_ and D_ files of the same name.
- Direct comparison of the original focused image and the processed Intrinsic image can be made by opening, clicking on, the F_ image listed in the table and the downloaded I_ image in the dock.
- The Processing page can be cleared either by clicking on the Clear button, or signing off from the website.
